How Parliament Works
Last updated: 24 September 2025
How Parliament Works begins with an introduction to the structure, functions, and roles in Parliament in our education centre, followed by visits to significant venues within the Parliamentary buildings.
This programme is designed to provide a wide range of students with an introduction to the workings of the New Zealand Parliament including discussion about the origins, structure, roles of Parliament and the impact it has on our lives. The information is tailored to the age and needs of the group and provides opportunity for students to ask questions specific to their curriculum focus.
Groups will visit selected venues within Parliament Buildings where possible, including:
- House of Representatives (Debating Chamber)
- Select committee room
- Theatrette (Press conference room)
- Parliamentary Library
Teacher testimonial
"The education team provided informative content on the role of Parliament and its importance. The students really enjoyed learning about the members of Parliament and were kept engaged as their questions were answered throughout by Caroline, who the students described as very nice. This was an experience the students found useful. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about Parliament."
How long is the programme?
How Parliament Works is a 60-90-minute programme. Visit durations are 90 minutes when the House is sitting and 60 minutes at all other times.
